Where is The Hawthorns Station?

The Hawthorns Station is at Halfords Lane, West Bromwich, West Midlands, B66 2HB

 

In brief

There was a station at this site from 1931 to 1968 called The Hawthorns Halt, opened by the Great Western Railway on their London Paddington to Birkenhead via Birmingham Snow Hill Line. The line was closed from the late 1960s until the early 1990s, when the Jewellery Line was built from Birmingham Snow Hill to Smethwick Galton Bridge. The Hawthorns opened at the present site in 1995, and by 1999 the tram platforms were opened for the Midland Metro line from Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton St George's. The West Bromwich Parkway ends at The Hawthorns.

The Hawthorns Station and Tram Stop - details

The Jewellery Line reopened a line closed between Birmingham Snow Hill and Smethwick Galton Bridge between the late 1960s and early 1990s.

The Hawthorns Station was opened in 1995 with platforms 1 and 2, the station is between Jewellery Quarter and Smethwick Galton Bridge.

The station is ideal for fans of West Bromwich Albion Football Club (and visiting supporters) on match days going to The Hawthorns football ground / stadium.

There is two entrances to the station, from Middlemore Road and from Halfords Lane in West Bromwich.

The station is one of two on the Jewellery Line that also has tram platforms.

The Hawthorns Tram Stop was opened on the former Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level Line in 1999, except the line went to Wolverhampton St George's Tram Stop in Wolverhampton City Centre.

Trains are every 10 minutes in both directions from Monday to Saturday each week, on Sunday's they are every half an hour in both directions.

Trams at The Hawthorns Tram Stop are quite frequent during the week, stopping at platforms 3 and 4. Usually at six to eight minute intervals, and every 15 minutes during evenings and Sunday's.

It is easy to change lines at The Hawthorns between trams and trains, you can only do this at The Hawthorns or Jewellery Quarter.

Trams

In the later years of the T69 Midland Metro trams, Midland Metro tram 10 is seeing leaving The Hawthorns on a service towards Birmingham Snow Hill (the Snow Hill terminus would close in 2015 when the first extension opened, to be replaced by St Chad's). Seen during late December 2014.

In January 2023, Urbos 100, West Midlands Metro tram 48 arrives at The Hawthorns from Wolverhampton St George's on a service to Edgbaston Village.  The Midland Metro line has been extended into Birmingham City Centre three times in the last decade.
